FMS Seminar

March 9th, 2008

This weekend I attended the Functional Movement Screening Seminar held in CentraState Hospital in Freehold, NJ. A colleague and friend of mine by the name of Charlie Weingroff held it with another physical therapist. The purpose of the seminar is to teach therapist, trainers, and coaches how to correctly assess the movements of the body and to determine if it is moving safely. It was a very interesting seminar and it is definitely something Juliet and myself will integrate into our assessment of clients. There are seven tests to be performed to test all types of movement patterns and basically you receive a score from 1 to 3 depending on your performance in the tests. If any test causes pain in the body you automatically get a zero. From the test scores we can determine where you body is moving in a dysfunctional way. Once we determine the problem areas we can address it with various mobility and stability exercises as well as teach new motor patterns so that it does not re-occur again. I enjoyed the seminar and think it is a great tool to add to our program. It was very reassuring to know that pretty much all of the corrective exercises that were taught to the class were exercises already being performed in our facility on a regular basis. This is a very good feeling.
